| It is with great pleasure we bring you the 7th edition of Visions magazine along with a brand new look for 2010. A recent evaluation of our corporate brand revealed that, despite strong recognition around the world, the Bausch + Lomb name was under-leveraged and needed to become more relevant and modern. Our updated brand identity is a strong signal of a new era at Bausch + Lomb and will help us achieve our vision of becoming the leader in eye health worldwide. |
| Alongside the revitalisation of our brand, and with a renewed focus on education, our Vision Care division has relaunched the Academy of Vision Care™ website, www.academyofvisioncare.co.uk. The new website allows you to personalise your experience with new features such as "My Academy" and "My Space" offering you the opportunity to pick and choose how you would like to structure your education. Additionally, there are now a total of 18 Continuing Education and Training (CET) points available in accredited materials from a host of key opinion leaders. It also allows you to store CET points you may have accrued through other online education in your own CET diary. Why not fulfil one of your New Year's resolutions by logging on and registering for a CET accredited course today? |

| Following the educational theme, our Pharmaceutical division starts its year by building awareness of nutrition and its impact on vision. A number of hospitals have already adopted new protocols on how to manage patients with macular health concerns, such as the nurse-led clinic in Wolverhampton featured in this edition. Bausch + Lomb is also running a series of educational events concerning the management of ocular inflammation following uveitis... read more... |

| In closing, I would like to wish you and your families a happy and prosperous New Year. |

| Standard spherical lenses create positive spherical aberrations as the peripheral rays come to a shorter focus than the central rays. This results in degradation in retinal image quality, causing a loss in contrast sensitivity. Pseudophakic patients' eyes with standard IOLs |

| Wolverhampton Eye Infirmary (WEI) is one of many eye units around the UK that is responsible for providing specialised treatment for patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a potentially blinding disease. |
| Led by Professor Yit Yang, the retinal services have rapidly evolved over the last year to provide an efficient treatment service for AMD patients. Previous to the introduction of intravitreal anti-VEGF therapy, Wolverhampton Eye Infirmary (WEI) was providing a tertiary PDT service for a population of over 1 million people. The transition from photodynamic therapy (PDT) to anti-VEGF therapies has necessitated equipment. |
| The increase in the frequency of follow up visits from 3 monthly with PDT to monthly with anti-VEGF's, and the fact that if diagnosed early, all patients suffering with Wet AMD could potentially be eligible for treatment, has meant the retinal team have had to adapt methods to cope with their workload. A rolesharing approach has been adopted to make full use of the knowledge and skills that many individuals within the team have gained from running a PDT Service. |
| Prompt referral for treatment increases the potential for successful patient outcomes. Greatest benefits can be achieved if the diagnosis is made early and patients receive treatment before... read more.. |

| The last twenty years have seen remarkable technological advances for creating soft toric contact lenses for astigmats, and these advances have increased the options and variety of lenses available. It is an important achievement that these lenses can now deliver a wide range of correction for astigmatism, which is fairly common and occurs to a variety of degrees. In the general population, several studies have shown that the prevalence of astigmatism of >1 diopter is ~30%, including a study of over 2500 children in the United States. (Kleinstein 2003) For the contact lens-wearing population, 45% of patients have been estimated to have an astigmatism of >0.75 diopters. (Holden 1975) |
| Despite the advances made, many astigmats still do not utilise this type of lens. (Morgan, 2009) With the large number of potential users, it is important that patients receive not only proper vision correction from their lenses, but also a high degree of satisfaction. |

| Lens Stability |
| The toric lens aligns its axis of cylinder correctionto the axis of astigmatic error to neutralise any existing astigmatic refractive error. To help maintain this alignment several stabilisation designs are utilised which have some of the following... read more... |

| The meeting took place in the RSM's main lecture theatre in central London, on 9th September 2009, attracting an audience of 146 attendees. | For over sixty years persuasion researchers have studied the influence process and found that anyone can significantly increase the likelihood that others will be persuaded by their requests, messages and advice by employing one or more of the six universal principles of influence. |
| Social proof - people behave in a similar way to others who are like them.
| Reciprocity - obligates people to do for others what they have done for them.
| Consistency - causes people to act in line with previous commitments even if demands escalate.
| Authority - people defer to those with expertise and credibility to guide their decisions.
| Liking - people are influenced more by those whom they like and who like them.
| Scarcity - opportunities appear more valuable when they appear less available.

| At first glance, a story about toys seems rather out of place in a publication written for people who work in the Eye Care Profession, but with a little explanation the relevance should become clear.
| Winter is the busiest and most profitable time of year for people who work in the toy industry with the manufacturers competing in a challenge to persuade children and parents that their toy should be regarded as THE 'must-have' toy. Whilst the toy itself is different each year - Tickle-Me-Elmo, Furby, Tracy Island and Nintendo Wii are some of the more recent examples - there is one thing that they all have in common. There never seems to be enough to go round.
